SKRILLEX: LIVE

Designing a Poster for Skrillex

Photo MusicTech

As an artist, designer, creator, it is important to find inspiration from different sources, cultures, and life. One of the key contributors to my inspiration is music. I have a deep love for music and using it to enhance visual storytelling. Whenever I am creating and working for hours, I can be found listening to music. In fact, as I write this post, I am listening to music now.

I have always drawn close to music. I used to create music, I used to be in a band, I still play multiple instruments, I blast music whenever I drive, and I have gone to many concerts and live events. One thing that I am always fascinated by, is the energy that comes from live events. Growing up, one of the biggest DJ’s was Skrillex. Reminiscing on some of his electronic music, I set out to create a poster for a Skrillex LIVE club event.

Pulse Check

The design centers on Skrillex, surrounded by glitchy text, Hot neon pink beams of light, and the unmistakable OWSLA logo.

The chosen color palette leans into the deep atmosphere you would see in a nightclub, erupting into strobe light colors from pink, red, purple, hints of blue- to it being refracted on club-goers’ phones. The typography is bold, unorthodox, and modern, echoing the chaotic energy of his sound.

Watch the Set

Here is Skrillex’s recent performance to truly understand his energy on stage. You can view the chaos from all different angles. Full Live Set at Ultra Music Festival 2025. Also, here is my favorite song that Skrillex ever worked on, featuring fellow DJ Diplo, and Justin Bieber. Where Are You Now. From the visuals, to the crowd, the sound, the confetti, to the fire and smoke-being on stage and in the crowd had to be pure adrenaline. Watching him on stage helped me to better visualize the theme for this poster.

The Soundtrack Behind the Design

While designing this poster, there were many songs by Skrillex that came to mind. I envisioned some of the songs that would be played at this event if I attended the event: “Bangarang,” “Purple Lamborghini,” “Where Are You Now,” and more. Remixes, fan favorites, and a mix of unreleased tracks would become an instant classic that would incorporate different layers, reflected in the poster. The glitch and unorthodox textures were inspired by the chaotic but cool drop in “Purple Lamborghini,” while the deep purple and underlying blue tones comes from “Where Are You Now,” and the shiny vibrant rings comes from “Face my Fears ft. Hikaru Utada”- which comes from one of my favorite video game series-‘Kingdom Hearts.’

Get the Full Experience

To get the full effect of Skrillex, I recommend to view the poster while listening to “Supersonic (My Existence).” The track encompasses the heat and range that Skrillex brings when behind the turntables.

Final Thoughts

Designing this poster was not about promoting a show-it was about combining sounds with sights. Skrillex was the first electronic DJ that I listened to. His music-energetic, genre-defying, punk, but also with a little edge and emotion. I wanted to create an event poster that reflected that same spirit as he enters a new phase in his music career. Whether you knew Skrillex or just discovered him, I hope that this piece inspires you to find artists and music that you enjoy. Especially when going into your creative zone.
