Two Worlds, One Memory

Memories are rarely linear. They come in fragments-colors, sounds, emotions-layered and blurred like a dream. In my latest production, I tried to capture that sensation by revisiting a core memory: a trip to the Dominican Republic with my brothers, who I co-own a production studio with.

This was not just a vacation. It was a journey; one that revealed starkly different realities, separated by one an hour’s drive.

On one side, we were documenting the lives of young girls living in impoverished areas-some of whom had been trafficked or sold against their will. Thankfully, they found a mission house that serves and protects them. However, they still need funds to go to school, have food to eat, adequate furniture and clothes in their size.

One the other side, we stayed at a luxurious resort-beaches, pools, suites with multiple showers and beds. It was paradise, one of the most beautiful places I have ever been or seen. But it felt surreal knowing what lay just beyond the horizon.

To reflect the complexity of this memory, I manipulated the video’s color grading, layering, and positioning. The result is intentionally disorienting. Clips overlap, colors strike and pop, some colors colored out. You will never see the full picture at once, and if you do, it’s for a moment-just like a memory or a dream.

This project isn’t just a video; it is a reflection of contrast and privilege many of us have. It is a reminder that beauty and suffering can exist side by side-and that as artists and filmmakers, we have a responsibility to show both. Enjoy!
