From this week’s unit, another soundtrack I recently created was my own mixtape. 🚨SPOILER ALERT🚨 I had a blast putting it together! This project gave me the freedom to blend songs I personally enjoy with tracks that I felt would shape the overall tone and mood of the mix. It was a creative challenge that pushed me to think like both a listener and a producer.
This mixtape features a diverse lineup of songs, played in this order:
“Stayed Together REMIX” by Yeat & Mariah Carey,
“Bartender” by Asal,
“Higher Power” by Coldplay,
“Timeless Instrumental” by The Weeknd and Playboi Carti,
“24K Magic” by Bruno Mars,
“Self-Love” by Metro Boomin and Coi Leray, and
“YUKON” by Justin Bieber.
I didn’t just drop the tracks in and hit play-I carefully edited each one. Most of the songs were trimmed down, with only Coldplay’s “Higher Power” remaining fully intact. I used a mix of fades, and sharp transitions to keep the energy dynamic unpredictable. Some transitions are smooth and seamless, while others are intentionally abrupt to jolt the listener and grab their attention. I often cut in during the most energetic or emotionally charged moments of a track to create a sense of anticipation and surprise.
One of the things I am most proud of is how I added my own creative spin to the mix. I layered in synth waves, sound effects and elements from various music packs to give the mixtape a unique texture-something that felt distinct from the original versions of the songs. The only tracks I left mostly untouched were “Stayed Together,” “Bartender,” and “YUKON.” Although, I did add a fade out at the very end of “YUKON” to better align with the overall arc of the mix.
The biggest challenge was making sure the songs-despite being from different genres and artists-felt cohesive when played together. I spent a lot of time tweaking the order, transitions, and effects to make sure the final product flowed naturally. As I edited, I kept thinking about how I wanted the audience to experience the mix-what emotions I wanted to add, and how each shift in sound could carry the listener forward.
I genuinely love the editing process. There is something powerful about shaping sound-about taking pieces of music that already exist and reimagining them into something new. This mixtape is more than just a playlist, it is a small reflection of my taste, creativity, and joy that I find in making music of my own. Even if listeners don’t catch every detail, I hope they can feel the energy and care that went into every transition.
