They say silence is golden. In his case, it’s lethal.
Before he was a name whispered in fear, before he became a ghost roaming the halls, he was just a boy. He was quiet, withdrawn, invisible to the world. From elementary school through high school, he was the target of relentless bullying. A group of classmates made it their mission to torment him, day after day. He never fought back, never cried, never spoke up-not once. His silence became his armor, and his curse.
Tragedy struck in middle school when his parent died in a house fire. With no family to claim him, he remained in the charred remains of his childhood home, surviving alone. The town turned a blind eye. People stayed away from him, crossing the street as if he had leprosy. He became a myth in his own neighborhood-the boy who only whispers. But he remembered everything-every laugh, every shove, every name.
There was one exception, Eliza. A girl in the group who never quite fit in with the others. She didn’t stop the bullying, but she tried. She told them to knock it off. She looked at him like he was still human. Although he never said a word, if he had, it would’ve been “Thank You…”
Senior year springs, and he sets a trap for his enemies. Detention. The fire alarm never rang, the teacher never made it out, and one-by-one, the bullies vanished. All but Eliza of course. He let her live. When he finally spoke, the world heard his voice for the first time. He finally got what he wanted.
“Thank You”
